If you are anything like me, when your kids say “I want a snow cone!” you groan a little inside. They are not my favorite thing…. Crunchy ice with sticky sweet syrup, yuck!
Today, my friends, is the day I change your mind!!!
Monday night Paula found out she had a leaky pipe in her yard. So, while the boys dug two very deep holes, we went for snow cones!
We decided to try Hokulia’s which was recommended by Lisa! It’s a Hawaiian Shave ice shack by the Walgreens off of Redwood road and 126th.
Monday was not a warm day, so we expected it to be pretty quiet. Not at all true. It was still hoppin’! And we soon discovered why. The Short Board size is considered a small! Nothing could be further from the truth! (It’s almost as big as your head!) They are massive! You can also order a long board or a Big Kahuna which get progressively more massive!
When ordering you have several options. You can add a scoop of ice cream in the center, sounds weird but it is soooooo not weird!!! I had the coconut ice cream with POG flavoring. I was in heaven! The ice is shaved like a real Hawaiian ice so it is almost creamy by it’s self. Another option, which was recommended by Lisa is the Snow Cap. This is a snow cone topped with sweetened condensed milk. Again, it sound weird but it is delicious! You can also top it with coconut flakes, or add a sour squirt!(The picture below is a Keiki Rainbow with a Snow Cap)
My recommendation is that you do not pass up the chance to try this treat! The lines can be long, but it is well worth the wait! The staff is friendly and they have wonderful recommendations if you are overwhelmed by the choices!
(Secret tip… if you just can’t see ordering even the short board ask for a kids size! It’s not on the menu, and it may leave you longing for more, but it’s available! The camera shy Miss B pictured below has a Keiki Rainbow without a snow cap in the smaller kid size!)
